It was one of a few experimental, gas-turbine Leylands - a project arising from the take-over of the Rover Car Company, in 1967. During the '60s, Leyland had several overseas plants building local variations on existing models, such as the Iranian Super Comet with its locally-designed cab.

Leyland trucks had seen some revolutionary changes in the '80s with the initial T45 Roadtrain launched in 1980. By 1986 the whole range comprised of the Roadrunner Freighter, Cruiser and Constructor models, all of which were selling reasonably well in the face of stiff opposition.

Leyland's engineers have it set up superbly on their latest, long-wheelbase tractive unit to give just the right degree of power assistance and none of the woolliness in the straight ahead position for which early Roadtrain models were criticised.

Introduced in 1980 The T45 range of lorries from British Leyland's Truck and Bus Division was the company's last ditch-effort at the UK market. The range replaced the previous Ergomatic/Freightline range beginning with the Roadtrain tractor unit and ending with the Constructor 6 (Bison replacement) .

Page 16, 25th October 2012 — Leyland T45 was 'underwhelming '. (CM 11 October) sums up the underwhelming reality of the Leyland Roadtrain perfectly. In the 1990s I worked as an agency driver, mainly for BOC Baker (later Gist) and WJ Sims (hauling for Sainsbury's). Baker's T45s had Rolls-Royce engines and the horrible Spicer gearbox.
